As early as 1958, the so-called “economic miracle” began. This implies an increase in the production of films. There are more than 200 films produced per year! Implicitly, that says important production says diversity of the films produced. Thus, there is a certain balance between auteur cinema and genre cinema. The increasing attendance of cinemas is a revealing sign of the good economy of those years.
Cinematographic Features
The main characteristic of this period is the fact that several generations of directors cohabit:
- The generation that began in the 1940s with Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica, and Luchino Visconti
- The generation that began in the 1950s with Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, Valerio Zurlini

Luchino Visconti
It was in the 1960s that Luchino Visconti probably signed his best films. In 1960, he directed Rocco and his brothers , a film quite close to neorealism, which was already a thing of the past. He also signed more intimate works such as Sandra in 1965. He also produced historical frescoes such as The Damned in 1969 and The Cheetah in 1963. The Cheetah is undoubtedly one of his best-known works. It is an adaptation of a novel of the same name just as famous by Giuseppe Tomasi Di Lampedussa. Note that Visconti’s adaptation only comes out 5 years after the release of the novel.
